Overview
A pilot was ferrying an aircraft from Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to Troy, Missouri. The aircraft was out of its annual inspection and had been issued a special airworthiness certificate. The pilot had not flown for two years prior to the accident.

The pilot completed the mandatory biennial flight review the day before the accident and reported logging four hours of flight time in the 24 hours preceding the accident.
Accident Sequence
According to the pilot, he made a normal approach to runway 09. During the flare, he realized he was too high. The aircraft then made a hard landing, which resulted in the right main tire blowing. The pilot added power in an attempt to execute a go-around, but the aircraft ground looped.
