Incident Details
The pilot reported that while climbing after a touch-and-go maneuver, the 'blown fuse' light for the generator illuminated. After replacing the fuse, sparks began emanating from behind the instrument panel. Smoke quickly filled the cockpit as the pilot attempted to smother the flames.
Flight Maneuvers
A 180-degree turn was initiated to return to Auburn. The pilot subsequently made a successful emergency landing.
Emergency Response
After landing, the pilot exited the aircraft and ran to a telephone to call the fire department, which arrived approximately 15 minutes later.
Investigation Findings
Subsequent investigation disclosed that the fire started near the ammeter fuse case.
