What happened
The pilot landed the aircraft at an extended distance on a private grass airstrip. Due to recent rainfall, the runway surface was wet, which significantly reduced braking effectiveness. The pilot reported little to no braking action during the landing roll.
To prevent the aircraft from overrunning the end of the runway and entering a three-foot deep ditch, the pilot deliberately initiated a ground loop maneuver. During this controlled turn, the nose gear collapsed under the stress. As the aircraft slid sideways across the end of the runway, it crossed over the ditch, causing damage to both wings and the main landing gear.
The investigation
The post-accident examination revealed that the nose gear had failed structurally during the ground loop. The wings and main landing gear sustained damage from sliding across the terrain at the runway threshold. The wet conditions of the grass strip were confirmed as a contributing factor to the reduced traction.
