What happened
During the final approach phase of flight, the crew encountered a critical mechanical failure involving the landing gear system. The right main landing gear refused to deploy using either the standard extension mechanism or the emergency deployment procedure. With the inability to lower the primary support strut, the pilot made the decision to execute an intentional gear-up landing. The aircraft touched down on its belly with all three landing gears remaining fully retracted within the fuselage and wing structures.
The investigation
Post-accident inspection of the airframe revealed extensive damage consistent with a hard, unassisted touchdown on concrete or pavement. A detailed examination of the landing gear mechanism identified the specific point of failure. The right main landing gear roller was found to be stuck in a position below the roller follower arm. This mechanical binding prevented the gear doors from opening properly.
Findings
The investigation determined that the stuck roller caused the gear doors to pull closed farther than their normal operational limit. Because the doors were forced shut, they effectively locked the landing gear assembly inside the door cavity. This configuration prevented any further movement or extension of the right main strut.
