Incident Overview
At the conclusion of a cross-country flight, the pilot was executing a downwind approach to the Lake Tahoe Airport. During the short final phase, the aircraft encountered light to moderate turbulence. Approximately 50 feet above ground level (AGL) over the runway, the aircraft exited the turbulent conditions and touched down near the midfield point.
Landing and Evacuation
After touchdown, the pilot applied moderate braking but then reported that the brakes had failed. With approximately 200 feet of runway remaining, the pilot elected to steer the aircraft off the runway to the right. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a ditch located adjacent to the runway.
Post-Incident Inspection
Following the incident, an inspection of the aircraft's braking system was conducted. The examination revealed no mechanical failure or malfunction of the braking components.
