Incident Overview
A mid-air collision occurred on short final for runway 25 involving two aircraft: N621SR, a Boeing model, and N80579. The collision took place while both aircraft were approaching the runway. The pilot of N621SR had entered the traffic pattern downwind and observed only one low-wing aircraft turning final. Moments later, on short final, he detected the presence of the other aircraft in his left peripheral vision just one second before impact.
Pilot Accounts
The pilot of N80579 stated that he entered the pattern behind a PA-28 aircraft. While turning final, he noticed that the speed difference between his aircraft and the PA-28 was causing the spacing to decrease. To maintain separation, he elected to perform a 360-degree turn on final, allowing the PA-28 additional time to land. Subsequently, on short final, he experienced a violent jerk and observed the propeller of the Boeing aircraft cutting into his right wing.
Communication
Regarding radio communication, the pilot of N621SR reported monitoring the UNICOM frequency but did not make any position reports. Conversely, the pilot of N80579 stated that he made five or six position reports, including one during his 360-degree turn. He did not hear any position reports from the Boeing aircraft.
