Incident Details
A private pilot was at the controls of an aircraft during the cruise phase of flight, shortly after departing from an airport. Without warning, the pilot suffered a massive heart attack. The pilot's wife, who was also on board and held a private pilot certificate that had expired, immediately assumed control of the aircraft. She was able to execute a safe landing without incident.
Aftermath
Following the landing, emergency medical services were summoned. The pilot was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigation
Investigators interviewed relatives and friends of the pilot. None reported any knowledge of a pre-existing medical condition that might have contributed to the event.
Medical Examination
An autopsy was performed on the pilot. The examination revealed evidence of a previous myocardial infarction (heart attack), severe narrowing of the cardiovascular arteries, and emphysema.
