Accident Sequence
A pilot reported that after takeoff, the aircraft climbed to 600 feet at a rate of 300 feet per minute, at which point the engine began to labor and then ceased running. The pilot applied carburetor heat and attempted to restart by priming through power reduction, but the engine would not restart. An emergency landing was performed on rough terrain, resulting in damage to the aircraft. At the time of the event, the ambient temperature was below freezing at 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
Investigation Findings
Following the event, investigators examined the engine but found no mechanical reason for the loss of power. The carburetor was removed from the engine and disassembled. The carburetor bowl was found full of fuel, and there was no evidence of water contamination.
