Incident Overview
A single-engine aircraft collided with trees while maneuvering in mountainous terrain over the island of Maui. The pilot had planned a local flight from Honolulu to Maui and return. After reaching Maui, the pilot notified the Flight Service Station (FSS) of a route change to pass through the island's central valley from north to south.
Flight Details
Following communication with the FSS, the pilot decided to overfly a 10,000-foot mountain to shorten the route. As the aircraft approached the mountain, the pilot realized that the terrain was rising faster than the aircraft could climb. In an attempt to avoid collision with the terrain, the pilot executed a left turn.
During the turn, the aircraft's landing gear struck a tree at the 4,500-foot level. The aircraft's airspeed was approximately 55 knots while in a 15- to 20-degree bank.
Precautionary Landing
After the tree strike, the pilot elected to land the aircraft in the trees. The aircraft came to rest among the vegetation.
Post-Accident Inspection
A subsequent examination of the aircraft systems revealed several deficiencies. The number 3 lead on the left-hand magneto was cut. Additionally, the camshaft lobes were found to be extremely worn, and all lifter faces exhibited extensive pitting.
