The pilot executed a hard landing on 58th Street in Holland, which was described as the only available landing area visible under dark night light conditions. The landing resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft.
Investigation Findings
Post-accident investigation of the engine revealed broken piston rings in the number one cylinder. Additionally, aluminum shavings were found throughout the engine's lubricating system, and the bearings were scored and burned.
Landing Details
The pilot selected 58th Street in Holland as the landing site, noting it was the only area that could be seen in the darkness. The hard landing caused significant structural damage to the aircraft.
Engine Condition
The engine failure sequence began with a loss of oil pressure. After about two minutes of continued operation, the engine seized entirely. The internal damage included broken piston rings, contamination of the lubrication system with metal debris, and thermal damage to bearings.
