Incident
During the initial power change after takeoff, the pilot-in-command (PIC) observed a loss of engine performance. The PIC initiated a left turn toward the downwind leg in preparation for landing. Shortly thereafter, both the PIC and ground witnesses reported that the engine stopped, and the aircraft descended into trees and then the ground. A post-crash fire ensued, consuming the aircraft.
Investigation
Before departure, the PIC reported taking a fuel sample and noted no water contamination. The aircraft had been refueled twice at the airport visited. After the second fueling, the aircraft remained uncovered for several hours during a period of hard rain. The aircraft maintenance log indicated that the fuel cap seals had been replaced five months prior.
Findings
Analysis of the fuel obtained from the airport showed no water present. However, droplets of water were found in the fuel truck filter. Examination of the engine revealed water damage to the pistons, cylinders, and spark plugs. The PIC's flight time was not reported or available.
