Accident Details
On April 15, 1987, at approximately 1910 Central Daylight Time, a private pilot attempted to land a Cessna 182Q on a 2650-foot dirt runway near Midland, Texas. A witness reported that the aircraft landed long and fast. During the landing roll, the brakes failed due to a pre-existing crack in the left brake line.
After the brake failure, the pilot attempted to take off again. However, the aircraft was unable to establish a rate of climb sufficient to clear a fence located at the departure end of the runway. The aircraft struck the fence, resulting in a loss of control and subsequent impact with the terrain.
Aircraft and Conditions
The aircraft involved was a Cessna 182Q. Density altitude at the time of the accident was 5012 feet. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. The pilot and one passenger on board sustained minor injuries.
Investigation
The investigation determined that the brake failure was caused by a pre-existing crack in the left brake line. No other contributing factors were identified in the source.
