Event Summary
During takeoff rotation, the left engine lost power. The runway length was 2,500 feet. The pilot elected to continue the takeoff.
Pilot Actions
The pilot switched the left fuel selector and placed the boost pump switch in the 'HIGH' position. The landing gear and flaps were retracted, but the left propeller was not feathered. Airspeed deteriorated to about 85 miles per hour.
Attempted Landing
The pilot attempted to land on a small perpendicular-oriented roadway. However, the aircraft was too low and slow for proper landing alignment. The pilot then reduced power on the right engine and landed in a marsh.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the aircraft after the accident revealed that the left main fuel strainer bowl was loose. The looseness was sufficient to allow introduction of air into the fuel system.
