Accident Description
The pilot was conducting a VFR straight-in approach when the engine failed. The fuel selector was positioned on the left tank, which contained 4 to 5 gallons of fuel. During descent, the fuel tank outlet line became unported, allowing air to enter the fuel system.
Sequence of Events
After the engine quit, the pilot switched the fuel selector to the right tank. However, he did not realize the engine was not operating until he attempted to add power on final approach. Unable to restart the engine, he executed a forced landing in a pasture with rough and uneven terrain.
Post-Impact Fire
Upon impact, a small fire erupted and consumed the cockpit, cabin area, and the inboard half of the left wing. The pilot could not recall whether the electric fuel boost pump had been turned on during the approach. Due to the fire, the position of the boost pump switch could not be determined.
Fuel System Considerations
The fuel system malfunction was attributed to the unporting of the left tank outlet line, which caused air ingestion. The pilot's subsequent actions, including switching tanks and the unknown status of the electric boost pump, did not restore engine power.
