What happened
A private pilot was conducting a local flight with one passenger on board. During the climb-out phase, approximately 50 feet above ground level, the engine experienced a partial loss of power. The pilot elected to land straight ahead in a nearby field. The initial touchdown and rollout were executed successfully without immediate structural failure.
However, during the final roll-out, the nose wheel descended into a hole in the terrain. This sudden drop caused the aircraft to pitch forward violently, resulting in a nosed-over position. Despite the damage to the landing gear and airframe, the pilot and passenger were not injured in the incident.
The investigation
Following the accident, an A&P mechanic with inspection authority performed a thorough teardown of the engine. The mechanical examination was conducted to determine if an internal failure could account for the reported power loss during flight.
The post-accident inspection revealed no evidence of mechanical defects or anomalies that would explain the partial power loss. All examined components appeared consistent with normal operation, leaving the cause of the power reduction undetermined based on physical evidence alone.
