Accident Overview
A student pilot conducting a no-flap landing overran the runway end, collided with a berm, and came to rest in a creek. The student reported that the aircraft initially touched down about midfield on the turf runway at an airspeed of approximately 75 knots. The normal final approach speed for the aircraft is 65 knots.
Sequence of Events
After the initial touchdown, the aircraft ballooned. The pilot attempted to reduce airspeed by lowering the flaps 10 degrees. The aircraft touched down again, at which point the pilot applied full braking. Despite these efforts, the aircraft was unable to stop before running off the end of the runway.
Runway Conditions and Pilot Experience
The student noted that the runway was damp at the time of the accident. The pilot had previously made several successful full-stop landings on the same runway shortly before the accident. The student pilot had accumulated approximately 6 hours of total solo flight time, all of which was acquired in this model of aircraft.
