Incident Overview
A pilot contacted approach control for radar services and weather information. The destination airport was experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorm activity. The pilot reported having the airport in sight, after which radar service was terminated and a visual approach was initiated.
Witness Observations
Witnesses reported that visibility dropped to 1/2 mile in heavy rain. They observed the aircraft land long and 'a little fast', noting it seemed to fishtail and was not decelerating sufficiently.
Go-Around and Collision
Subsequently, the pilot initiated a go-around. During the maneuver, the aircraft struck the top rail of a chain link fence before hitting several trees and crashing.
Mechanical Findings
No preimpact mechanical malfunction or failure of the aircraft or engine was found. Both main tires exhibited signatures of reverted rubber, indicating locked-wheel skidding on a wet surface.
