Incident Overview
An aircraft was conducting a low pass approximately 200 feet above ground level over Runway 27L to allow air traffic control tower personnel to inspect the landing gear position after the pilot reported landing gear difficulties. After tower personnel informed the pilot that the gear appeared to be down, the pilot requested to land on Runway 09L.
Sequence of Events
As the aircraft passed abeam the control tower, witnesses reported that the engine stopped. The aircraft then made a sharp right turn toward Runway 09L, appeared to stall, and descended to the ground.
Post-Accident Inspection
Inspection of the engine did not reveal any malfunctions. Approximately 2,200 feet of Runway 27L remained available if the pilot had elected to land straight ahead after the power loss. Eight gallons of fuel remained in the left wing; the right wing fuel tank was damaged and leaking post-crash. The fuel selector was positioned on the left main tank.
