Weather and Departure
According to the official investigation, the weather at the departure airport included clouds at approximately 900 feet with tops at 2,400 feet. The aircraft departed and, based on ATC transcripts and recorded radar data, entered the clouds about 1 mile from the end of the runway.
Air Traffic Control Interaction
Shortly after entering the clouds, the flight entered the Los Angeles Terminal Control Area (TCA). The Santa Monica local controller informed the pilot of his position and advised him to exit the area.
Recorded Radar Data
Recorded radar data showed that the aircraft then entered a right 270-degree turn, followed by a sharp left turn.
Witness Observations
Witnesses on a boat observed the aircraft in a steep climb attitude just below the bases of the clouds, followed by the aircraft rolling over and diving steeply into the ocean.
Investigation
The investigation is ongoing. No probable cause has been determined at this time.
