An instructor pilot took control of an aircraft for a landing in excessive crosswind. After touchdown, brakes applied with no effect, and the aircraft rolled off the end of Runway 35. Post-crash examination revealed no mechanical issues.

Incident Details

An instructor pilot (IP) assumed control of the aircraft to perform a landing due to excessive crosswind conditions. The IP reported that the approach speed was 70 to 75 knots. The aircraft touched down on the first third of the runway. With half of the runway remaining, the brakes were applied but provided no braking action. The brakes were then reapplied with excessive pressure, again with no effect. The aircraft subsequently rolled off the end of Runway 35.

Pilot Reports

Both pilots stated that they had listened to the Automated Terminal Information Service (ATIS), contacted Albuquerque Approach Control, and heard the Coronado UNICOM advisories. These sources all indicated that the winds were from 110 degrees at 10 knots. However, a pilot of an aircraft that had departed earlier from Coronado reported over the radio that the winds were from the east at 15 knots, gusting to 25 knots.

Post-Crash Examination

A post-crash examination of the aircraft revealed no mechanical problems.
