Flight and Encounter
A pilot was conducting a visual flight rules (VFR) flight at an altitude of 4,500 feet mean sea level (MSL) over mountainous terrain. During the flight, the pilot encountered lowering cloud ceilings. In an effort to remain clear of the clouds, the pilot initiated a descent. However, the aircraft inadvertently entered the clouds, resulting in the pilot losing visual reference with the terrain.
Accident Sequence
While inside the clouds, the pilot attempted to reverse course by turning around. According to a survivor, who is the pilot's wife, trees suddenly appeared into view, followed by a collision with trees. The aircraft came to rest near the top of a mountain at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet MSL.
Rescue
Following the accident, the aircraft's emergency locator transmitter (ELT) activated. Search and rescue personnel reached the accident site about 23 hours after the accident occurred.
