Overview
A Cessna 180K experienced a wing tip drag incident during the landing roll on runway 28R. The aircraft's left wing tip made contact with the runway surface, resulting in structural damage to the wing spar.
Sequence of Events
The pilot reported that while landing, the aircraft encountered a wind gust from the left, which caused the right wing to rise. In an attempt to correct for the gust, the pilot applied control inputs that he later described as an overcorrection. When the gust subsided, the aircraft rolled to the left, coming to rest on its left main landing gear. This allowed the left wing tip to contact the ground, dragging along the runway and bending the left wing spar. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the airplane was observed porpoising prior to veering off the runway.
Weather Conditions
Meteorological data from 15 minutes before the incident reported winds from 320 degrees at 10 knots.
Damage
The left wing tip sustained drag marks, and the left wing spar was bent. No other damage was specified.
