Accident Overview
An accident occurred during the initial climb phase of flight in instrument meteorological conditions. The pilot, a Mexican certificated private pilot who was not rated for multiengine operations nor for instrument flight, diverted his attention from flying the aircraft to adjust the mixture control on the left engine. Subsequently, the aircraft struck the ground, cartwheeled, and came to rest approximately 200 feet from the initial impact point.
Sequence of Events
The accident sequence began when the pilot, while climbing into IFR conditions, shifted his focus to the left engine's mixture control. The aircraft then impacted the terrain and cartwheeled, coming to a stop about 200 feet beyond the first impact. The impact forces were severe: both engines separated from their respective wings, and both wings detached from the fuselage.
Investigation Findings
Post-accident examination revealed that the aircraft was 600 pounds above its maximum certified gross weight at the time of the accident. The pilot held a Mexican private pilot certificate but lacked multiengine and instrument ratings. No other factors were identified.
