Incident Overview
During final approach to Runway 24 at Fullerton Airport, the pilot experienced a total loss of engine power. With insufficient altitude to reach the runway, the pilot chose to land in an open area adjacent to the airport. During the landing, the airplane's left wing struck a building and separated from the aircraft.
Wreckage Examination
Post-incident examination of the wreckage revealed findings related to the fuel system. The right wing fuel tank was empty, and its reservoir contained less than a quarter cup of fuel. The right wing fuel system was intact and not compromised. In contrast, the left wing tank contained approximately 15 gallons of fuel, and its reservoir was full. The fuel selector was found positioned to the right tank. The fuel line between the engine-driven fuel pump and the fuel control unit remained intact but contained no fuel.
No probable cause was stated in the source.
