Accident Summary
The pilot reported that during the preflight inspection, a thorough check of the fuel system for contaminants and water was conducted, and no discrepancies were noted. Shortly after takeoff, at an altitude of approximately 100 feet, the engine sputtered and lost power. The pilot stated that he initiated a left turn to land in a clearing, but the main landing gear struck a pile of dirt.
Pilot Actions
The pilot indicated that during the preflight, he rocked the wings of the aircraft before draining fuel samples and may not have allowed sufficient time for additional water to accumulate. The pilot was transported to a medical center and treated for minor injuries. A blood test revealed a very low level of alcohol (0.0074%).
Investigation Findings
A post-accident examination of the carburetor revealed that it contained water. The last annual inspection of the aircraft was dated July 3, 1986.
