Accident Overview
A Cessna 170A was engaged in an aerial photography flight when it crashed under circumstances described by witnesses. The aircraft was observed flying slowly at an altitude of approximately 200 feet above ground level when it began to settle. Witnesses then heard an increase in engine power and saw the aircraft pitch up. Subsequently, the aircraft "fell off on a wing," entered a steep descent, and crashed, after which it burned.
Investigation Findings
Due to the extent of impact and fire damage, investigators were unable to determine whether the pilot was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. No preimpact part failure or malfunction was identified.
Pilot Information
The pilot, aged 72, held a medical certificate last dated June 13, 1985. The most recent biennial flight review was completed approximately 34 months prior to the accident.
Toxicology Results
A toxicology examination detected the presence of desmethyldiazepam, an active metabolite of diazepam (Valium), at a level of 0.1 ug/mL. According to the toxicology report, therapeutic levels of diazepam range from 0.1 to 2.1 ug/mL.
