Accident Overview
The pilot reported that all engine power was lost during the cruise phase of flight. He attempted to divert to the Camden, Arkansas airport. The aircraft did not reach the intended landing area and subsequently struck a tree and then a swamp area.
Investigation Findings
An investigation revealed no airframe malfunctions. Examination of the engine disclosed a cracked oil line connecting the propeller governor to the engine case. This cracked line allowed the oil system to be depleted of oil. The engine seized after the number 3 piston failed.
Further examination of the cracked oil pressure line determined that neither of the two required securing clamps, which were intended to dampen vibration of the line, were present. The absence of these clamps left the line unsupported, contributing to the development of the crack.
