Overview
A general aviation aircraft was destroyed when it struck trees during a go-around. The accident occurred while the aircraft was landing with a quartering tailwind. The pilot retracted the flaps during the go-around, and the aircraft subsequently settled into trees, resulting in its destruction.
Circumstances
According to a passenger, the pilot retracted the flaps just as the aircraft passed over the trees. Immediately after the flap retraction, the aircraft began to descend and struck the trees. An elevation drawing prepared by investigators shows the aircraft positioned above the trees before descending into them.
Investigation Findings
Investigators reported that no malfunctions of the aircraft were discovered during the investigation. The pilot had been attempting a go-around when the flap retraction occurred. Due to serious head injuries sustained in the accident, the pilot was unable to complete his accident report.
Occupant Restraint Use
It was noted that the front seat occupants were not using the available shoulder harnesses at the time of the accident. The shoulder harnesses were present in the aircraft but were not worn.
