Incident Narrative
Immediately after liftoff for a local flight, the pilot-in-command, who was seated in the right seat, noticed the front edge of the nose baggage compartment door "pop open." He took over control of the aircraft and attempted a teardrop-shaped return to the opposite runway. During this maneuver, the baggage door opened fully. The pilot was then unable to achieve proper alignment with the runway. He subsequently banked the aircraft to the left. In his own words, "the airplane quit flying," meaning the aircraft stalled. The aircraft then collided with the airport surface to the left of the runway and came to a stop.
