Accident Details
The accident occurred during a checkout flight conducted by a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) for a private pilot who was a doctor. The CFI had only one hour of experience in the specific make and model of the aircraft. The flight was practicing an ILS approach when the engine quit approximately one mile short of the final approach for Runway 26 at Cheyenne Municipal Airport.
Flight and Engine Performance
Throughout the flight, the fuel selector was positioned to the right tank. After the engine failure, neither pilot could recall switching the fuel selector to another tank during the emergency or during subsequent restart attempts. A post-accident inspection and engine run test showed no evidence of a mechanical engine problem.
Post-Accident Findings
Investigation revealed that the aircraft landed on a highway. During the landing, the aircraft struck a curb, a chain link fence, and a light pole. The landing gear collapsed, and the aircraft skidded to a stop. The right fuel tank was ruptured, but only a small amount of fuel spilled.
Landing and Damage
The aircraft sustained damage from the collision with obstacles and the collapse of the landing gear. The ruptured fuel tank did not result in significant fuel spillage.
