Accident Sequence
Shortly after departure, the aircraft's engine began to run roughly. The pilot reported that he believed he could make it back to the airport and turned toward it. Just short of the airport boundary, the engine failed completely. The pilot managed to reach the airport but was aligned crosswise to the runway. While maneuvering to align the aircraft, the right wing tip struck the ground. The impact caused the right landing gear strut to fail, and the left gearbox separated from the wing structure.
