Incident Details
The aircraft was climbing through approximately 800 feet above ground level (AGL) after takeoff when the engine began to run rough. According to the pilot, the engine then "quit and restarted" several times. The pilot reported that insufficient power was available to maintain flight and attempted a landing in a tree-covered field near the airport.
Investigation Findings
Following the event, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspectors examined the aircraft. They found that each fuel tank contained about 6 gallons of fuel. The inspection did not identify any mechanical malfunctions or failures.

At the time of the incident, the temperature at Fresno, California, located approximately 15 miles west-northwest of Reedley, California, was 67 degrees Fahrenheit, with a dew point of 48 degrees Fahrenheit. According to icing probability charts, these conditions were conducive to carburetor icing.
