Maneuver Sequence
The instructor pilot reported that after completing several straight-in and 180-degree autorotations, the decision was made to attempt hovering autorotations. The first hovering autorotation was executed successfully while the helicopter was in a tailwind condition.
Accident Sequence
The student pilot initiated a second hovering autorotation, still in a downwind orientation, from a stabilized hover at an altitude of 3 to 5 feet. According to the certified flight instructor (CFI), the nose of the helicopter began to pitch down very abruptly. Both the CFI and the student immediately applied aft cyclic control input. Directional control was maintained throughout the event; however, the aircraft collided with the ground. The main rotor blades and the forward portion of the skids made contact with the ground.
Post-Accident Actions
Following the ground contact, the helicopter rocked back to a level attitude. The engine and systems were then shut down.
