Incident Overview
During an agricultural flight, the pilot initiated takeoff from a wet sod strip in a northerly direction. As the takeoff roll progressed, the wind shifted, now coming from the south. The pilot determined that the aircraft would not achieve sufficient airspeed and altitude to clear a silo, fuel tanks, and powerlines located at the north end of the strip. To avoid these obstacles, he lifted off early and immediately turned left.
Sequence of Events
Following the early lift-off and left turn, the aircraft subsequently settled back to the ground in a field adjacent to the strip. Shortly after touchdown, the main landing gear dug into the soft terrain, causing the aircraft to flip over. The aircraft sustained substantial damage as a result of the event.
Investigation Findings
Investigators examined the aircraft and found no evidence of mechanical failure or malfunction. The aircraft's performance and the pilot's decision-making were assessed based on the described circumstances. No further causes were identified by the investigation.
