Accident Sequence
Witnesses observed the aircraft maneuvering at low altitude. The nose was seen to drop, and a left rotation began. One witness reported that the rotation stopped before the aircraft disappeared behind a tree line. The aircraft caught fire within one minute of impact and burned.
Injuries and Damage
The private pilot, who was working on commercial maneuvers, and the flight instructor were fatally injured. The cockpit area was destroyed by fire.
Examination
No pre-existing problems were found with the engine or the airframe. The examination did not identify any mechanical deficiencies.
Operational Context
The company policy required that all maneuvers be terminated at 500 feet above ground level (AGL). At the time of the accident, the aircraft was maneuvering at steep angles of bank and below 500 feet AGL.
