An airplane broke up in flight near a level two thunderstorm after the pilot encountered forecast thunderstorms, lost control, and the aircraft experienced structural failure.

Encounter with Thunderstorms

The pilot encountered forecast thunderstorms en route. At 1430 CDT, the pilot reported being at 2,400 ft MSL, climbing to a cruise altitude of 8,000 ft. At 1440, the pilot requested and received approval to deviate around weather. No further difficulty was reported, but shortly thereafter, loss of control and an in-flight breakup of the aircraft occurred.

Weather Conditions

Weather and radar data indicate that the airplane broke up near the edge of a level two thunderstorm. Local residents reported heavy rain and lightning in the area.

Structural Failures

The outboard end of the left wing and the stabilator had separated in flight. The left wing failed in positive overload. Although the right wing had not separated, it also revealed damage from high positive loading. The stabilator fractures indicated torsional overload.

Pilot Information

Both pilots held private pilot certificates and were instrument-rated.
