Takeoff Attempt
The pilot attempted a takeoff from an airport located at an elevation of 2,900 feet above mean sea level (MSL). The observed unofficial outside air temperature was reported as 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Although no exact pressure altitude was available, an approximate density altitude of 6,300 feet was derived from the temperature and an assumed pressure altitude.
Pilot Actions
For the uphill takeoff, the pilot selected 20 degrees of flaps. After liftoff, he reduced the flaps to 10 degrees. As the aircraft climbed out toward rising terrain, the pilot stated that the aircraft was not climbing sufficiently. He elected to turn down a canyon toward lower terrain.
Collision
During the turn, the right wing struck a moderate sized bush on the top of a ridge. Subsequently, the aircraft collided with the ground. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions prior to the ground collision.
