Incident Summary
The pilot reported that the engine failed shortly after takeoff. In response, the pilot made a 180-degree turn and landed downwind on the runway. To avoid a drop-off beyond the runway end, the pilot elected to land with the landing gear retracted. The aircraft slid off the runway end but came to a stop before reaching the drop-off.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the engine revealed that the #4 rod bearing had failed due to a lack of lubrication, despite oil being present in the crankcase. The engine manufacturer specifies that the minimum safe oil quantity in the engine is 2 quarts. The mechanic who examined the engine found 1 quart of oil remaining.
Additionally, the pilot stated that the engine had experienced an in-flight loss of oil pressure two days prior, prompting a precautionary landing. The mechanic who examined the engine after that event found an improperly secured fitting on the propeller governor oil line. The mechanic secured the fitting, checked the oil filter and screen for metal particles, and serviced the engine with oil. The engine was test-run several times and then released to the owner.
Previous Incident
The earlier loss of oil pressure was traced to the improperly secured fitting on the prop governor oil line. After the mechanic secured the fitting and serviced the engine, no further issues were reported until the subsequent engine failure during takeoff.
