Event Sequence
The incident began shortly after takeoff as the aircraft was climbing. The front engine experienced a total loss of power. The pilot determined that a fuel leak was responsible and secured the engine. Despite this action, the aircraft could not maintain its altitude and began descending at a rate of approximately 50 feet per minute.
Landing Decision
Given the presence of a thunderstorm at the departure airport, the pilot decided against returning and instead chose to make an emergency landing in a field. During the final approach, the pilot encountered downdrafts and windshifts. These conditions caused the landing to be longer than intended.
