Accident Sequence
The pilot initiated a takeoff but aborted it when the engine failed to develop full power. After performing another run-up, the pilot attempted a second takeoff. Midfield, the pilot again aborted the takeoff by retarding the power and applying heavy braking, citing continued insufficient power. The brakes faded, and the aircraft overran the runway.
During the overrun, the aircraft struck a ditch and subsequently a barbed wire fence. It came to rest in another ditch, where the nose gear separated from the airframe.
Engine Examination
Investigators could not determine a reason for the engine's failure to develop full power during either takeoff attempt.
Brake System Inspection
Examination of the brake system revealed evidence consistent with overheating: overtemperature damage, excessive wear, and deteriorated brake seals.
