Accident Sequence
The pilot intended to perform a touch-and-go landing on a grass strip. He reported that during the approach, he came in somewhat high. The aircraft was still airborne about halfway down the runway when he elected to go around. As he attempted to add power, the engine sputtered and died. The pilot then forced the main landing gear onto the runway and applied brakes. Within seconds, the aircraft nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination after the accident revealed that the left main wheel had broken off at the axle. Subsequently, the left strut dug into the ground, causing the aircraft to nose over. Except for soot found in the exhaust stacks and on the spark plugs, no evidence of a pre-accident mechanical problem was discovered.
Pilot Report and Conditions
The pilot reported that he had moved the carburetor heat to the off position while on final approach. The temperature and dew point were recorded as 43°F and 26°F, respectively. According to icing probability charts, these conditions are conducive for carburetor ice formation.
