Accident Overview
A pilot reported a complete engine failure while descending to traffic pattern altitude. Attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful. The airplane subsequently crashed in a field, colliding with a round bale hay holder during the landing attempt.
Investigation Findings
Examination of the engine revealed that the internal magneto timing was set at 30 degrees and 27 degrees, respectively, while the prescribed setting is 25 degrees. After an engine run was completed, the bottom spark plugs were found wet with fuel. The engine had been overhauled approximately 165 flight hours prior to the accident. About six months after the overhaul, platinum-tip spark plugs were installed to correct a magneto RPM drop problem.
