Accident Details
The pilot reported that the airplane experienced a loss of power shortly after takeoff. A forced landing was subsequently made in a swamp near the airport. During the landing rollout, the airplane nosed over.
Findings
A post-crash examination of the airplane revealed that the throttle cable outer casing had become brittle and disintegrated, resulting in a loss of throttle control. Cracks were visible on the remaining portions of the outer casing.
Maintenance Records
Examination of the aircraft maintenance logbooks showed that the aircraft had undergone a 100-hour inspection two months before the accident. The aircraft had operated for approximately 47 hours since that inspection. Further review of the logbooks indicated no entries pertaining to the removal or replacement of the throttle cable since the aircraft was new. The total time on the aircraft was 3,939 hours based on tachometer time.
Regulatory Context
Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 43, Appendix D requires that engine controls be inspected for defects during 100-hour inspections.
