Factual Summary
An aircraft suffered a complete loss of engine power and impacted trees near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. The pilot attempted a forced landing but encountered difficulties due to oil on the windshield and smoke inside the cockpit. The aircraft stalled after the pilot noticed the airplane brushing against treetops.
Engine Examination
A post-accident teardown inspection of the engine disclosed extensive preimpact damage. The #3 main bearing had failed, leading to an interruption of oil supply to the #4 and #5 bearings. This oil starvation resulted in the failure of a connecting rod. Approximately one quart of oil remained in the crankcase. Metal particles and oil were found in the oil pump.
Accident Sequence
During the forced landing, the pilot's visibility was reduced by oil obscuring the windshield and smoke filling the cockpit. These conditions impeded the landing attempt. As the airplane descended, it made contact with treetops; upon noticing this, the pilot allowed the aircraft to stall.
