What happened
Following departure from Runway 18, the pilot of N76470 executed a noise abatement procedure before turning onto a downwind leg for Runway 18. Simultaneously, the pilot of N73114 departed from the grass portion of Runway 18 and followed a noise abatement procedure before turning to a heading of 070 degrees to exit the area.
The collision occurred at an altitude of approximately 800 feet MSL. At the time of the impact, N76470 was roughly one-third of the way along its downwind leg, while N73114 was crossing that same downwind leg.
The pilot of N73114 reported that his attention was diverted by the task of changing the radio frequency. He noted that a passenger alerted him to another aircraft to his right, but by the time he visually identified the other plane, the collision had already taken place. The pilot of N76470 stated he did not observe N73114 until after the impact occurred.
Following the mid-air collision, both aircraft were not injured and both planes successfully returned to land at Hummel Airport without further incident.
