Approach and Landing Attempt
The pilot was executing a VOR runway 6 approach followed by a circling maneuver to land on runway 24. While on a short final approach, the aircraft was thrown violently about and the left wing dipped. The pilot applied full power and leveled the wings, but the aircraft continued to descend. Realizing the runway could not be reached, the pilot reduced power, turned off the electrical master switches, and attempted to place the aircraft on the best available terrain.
Impact and Post-Impact Conditions
The aircraft subsequently impacted in an area of sand dunes on a heading of 240 degrees and came to rest after traveling approximately 33 feet. Witnesses in the area reported strong winds, reduced visibility, and rain showers. The pilot stated that it was not raining at the time of the crash, but heavy rain began to fall immediately afterward.
