Flight History
The pilot reported diverting to an alternate airport after encountering fog at the intended destination. While en route at approximately 2,000 feet mean sea level, the engine lost power. The pilot stated that he repositioned the fuel selector and activated the boost pump, but his attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful.
During the landing roll, the aircraft collided with terrain and sustained damage.
Examination
Post-accident examination of the aircraft revealed that the right fuel tank was empty, while the left tank still contained approximately 18 gallons of fuel. No preimpact part failure or malfunction of the aircraft was found.
Engine Test
After the accident, the engine was started and ran normally up to 900 RPM, but was not operated above that speed due to a bent propeller blade. The pilot's medical certificate was dated May 19, 1986.
