A pilot practicing landings in a rented Cessna 172 experienced an engine power loss while turning base. The aircraft nosed over during the subsequent forced landing. Investigation found the primer extended, a missing left fuel cap, and evidence of raw fuel in cylinders.

Events of the Flight

After completing a preflight inspection and engine runup, the pilot departed for landing practice and remained in closed traffic. On the downwind leg, opposite the intended touchdown point, the pilot reduced power, applied carburetor heat, and slowed the airplane. While turning from downwind to base, the engine lost power. The pilot selected a field for a forced landing. During the landing, the aircraft nosed over.

Post-Accident Findings

Examination of the airplane revealed that the primer was in the full out (extended) position. The left fuel cap was missing. Two cylinders had their bottom spark plugs fouled by raw fuel. These conditions were noted in the post-accident inspection.

Pilot Information

The pilot had rented the Cessna 172 to practice for his biennial flight review, which was due by the end of the month. His private pilot certificate had been issued in December 1986.
