Incident Details
A pilot performing a touch-and-go landing lost control of the aircraft during the landing phase. The airplane skidded off the left side of the runway, which was wet and icy, and subsequently nosed over in a snowbank. The pilot reported that while on the downwind leg, he observed the wind sock indicating a shift in wind direction. Despite this, he decided to proceed with the landing with a tailwind, noting that a Cessna 152 had just successfully completed a landing under similar conditions.
Pilot's Account
The pilot, a private pilot with 53 hours of flight experience, stated that he saw the wind sock change direction but elected to land with the tailwind. He based his decision on the fact that another aircraft had just landed successfully with the same wind conditions.
Weather Conditions
According to the pilot, variable and gusty winds along with turbulence had been forecast for the area. Despite this forecast and a recommendation not to fly, the pilot proceeded with the flight. The runway surface was reported as wet and icy at the time of the accident.
