Engine Failure
Descent was normal until the pilot observed the ammeter needle fluctuating. Immediately thereafter, the oil pressure gauge indicated zero pressure. Shortly afterward, the engine seized, rendering it inoperable.
Forced Landing
The pilot identified a straight, paved stretch of road suitable for a forced landing. As the approach progressed, a semi-trailer truck entered the roadway, blocking the intended landing path. The pilot elected to abort the road landing and instead set the aircraft down in an adjacent wheat field. During the landing roll in the field, the landing gear collapsed.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the engine revealed a lack of lubrication and a separated connecting rod. A fan-shaped oil deposit was found on the inside of the bottom engine cowling, located beneath the oil cooler. Records indicated the oil cooler had been installed 29 flight hours prior to the incident.
